This award is for the first named author of the best published paper in the JSAP in small animal surgery, including but not limited to, soft tissue surgery, anaesthesia, orthopaedics and surgical aspects of neurology, ophthalmology, diagnostic imaging and exotics (NTCA) during the 12 months ending 30th September. There are no nominations for this award, and it is decided by the JSAP Editor after consultation with the Editorial Board.

2026 Winner

Stefano Zanardi DVM, GPCert(SASTS), GPAdvCert (SurgOnco)

Stefano Zanardi is the recipient of the Melton Award in recognition of his research paper; ‘Intraoperative methylene blue staining is effective as a single mapping technique in the identification of sentinel lymph nodes in dogs with low-grade mast cell tumours’, which was published in the Journal of Small Animal Practice (JSAP). He is currently a PhD candidate at the Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences of the University of Bologna, with a research focus on small animal surgical oncology.
