Cells, stains and microscopes

On 3rd February, Southern region held their Annual Regional Meeting (ARM) followed by a dermatology CPD course on ‘Cells, stains and microscopes in the diagnosis of skin disease’.

The course was delivered by Dr Steve Shaw, an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Dermatology, and national dermatology advisor to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

The evening was well attended and delegates were rewarded with an entertaining and informative presentation.  First, Steve Shaw went through the process of sample collection, whether through tape strips, impression smears, scrapes or fine needle aspirates.  After a reminder on the importance of proper microscope set up, delegates moved on to practical examples of the value of microscopy in a variety of dermatology cases.  Steve gave a number of clinical examples, before showing  a series of slides designed to test the audience.

The evening gave delegates a number of useful tips on all aspects of dermatology cytology, from collection to examination and interpretation.  Steve’s evident love of dermatology is infectious and attendees should have a renewed enthusiasm for this area of practice.

The meeting was kindly sponsored by Bayer.
