Learn Online: Getting to grips with thoracic radiology

This online course is intended for veterinary surgeons working in clinical practice who would like to develop confidence in the interpretation of thoracic radiographs. Examples of X rays from clinical cases will be used throughout to ensure the course is relevant to a first opinion clinical caseload. 

Online activities (including quizzes and case studies) will support your learning and discussions on the online forum will be encouraged. We also provide additional resources to complement the course - the ‘BSAVA Bonus Bits’. These will include congress podcast recordings, JSAP and companion articles as well as a free chapter from the relevant BSAVA Manual .

The first weekly unit will be released on the First Friday of the month, with the next weekly units being released on the following two Fridays. The discussion forum is open for the first four weeks of the course and the course content will remain available for a total of 12 weeks. You can complete the work how and when you choose over these 12 weeks

  • Week 1: Respiratory system (thoracic)
  • Week 2: Cardiac system (heart and vasculature)
  • Week 3: Pleural space and mediastinum; thoracic boundaries

Intended learning outcomes

After completion of the course, participants will be able to 

  • Understand the value and limitations of radiography for the assessment of the thorax in the dog and cat
  • Evaluate thoracic X rays carefully and systematically
  • Interpret the common radiographic changes associated with injury or disease of the thorax
  • Decide when further investigation and/or advice is needed

To qualify for an applicable refund, cancellations must emailed to or requested by telephone on 01452 726700. With over 30 days’ notice we will refund 70% of the course fee.  With between 15-30 days’ notice we will refund 50% of the course fee.  No refunds will be provided for cancellations with notice of 14 days or less, however if we are able to resell your place on the course we will provide a full refund.

BSAVA reserves the right to alter the programme or the speaker should this become necessary due to unavoidable circumstances.  BSAVA reserves the right to cancel a course due to unforeseen circumstances.  Registrants should note that the BSAVA member's rate applies only when the person attending the course is a member of the Association.  To qualify for the reduced member's rate for courses, non-members must join BSAVA prior to the course.
