As Veterinary professionals, we are frequently called upon to provide a nutritional recommendation to patients under our care. Nutrition is the cornerstone of all excellent veterinary care so it should ideally form part of the discussion with every pet owner seeking advice about their pet.
Nutrition is a large topic, so this course will aim to give a valuable grounding in the most important nutritional principles and concepts that will be frequently required in practice.
The course intends to give you the confidence to thoroughly assess the situation, extract all relevant information and to deliver an excellent, individualised nutritional recommendation.
Online activities (including quizzes and case studies) will support your learning and discussions on the online forum will be encouraged. We also provide additional resources to complement the course - the ‘BSAVA Bonus Bits’. These will include congress podcast recordings, JSAP and companion articles as well as a free chapter from the relevant BSAVA Manual (as well as a discount voucher for purchasing the whole book).
The first weekly unit will be released on the First Friday of the month, with the next weekly units being released on the following two Fridays. The discussion forum is open for the first four weeks of the course and the course content will remain available for a total of 12 weeks. You can complete the work how and when you choose over these 12 weeks.
- Describe how to extract all relevant information so a thorough nutritional assessment can be made promoting the success of the subsequent recommendation.
- Recognise key nutritional elements that change throughout life and how the life stage of a pet can be supported through nutrition to maintain good health
- Discuss a broad range of disease states where nutrition plays a vital role in the management of the condition
- Describe the many different diet types now available and how to have evidence-based discussions with pet owners.
- Gain useful insight into the motivations of pet owners and how to handle difficult conversations
