Learn Online: Orthopaedics 101: Approach to the lame dog

Start Date: Friday 1st October 2021
Tutor: Kevin Parsons

Fees: BSAVA Members £120; Non Members £150

This course is designed to give a basic introduction to orthopaedics for those first opinion vets who feel under confident when being presented with a lame dog in a busy first opinion clinic. It is expected that by the end of the course delegates will feel more confident in their approach to these often challenging cases. The focus will be on performing a complete orthopaedic examination, choosing the appropriate diagnostic tests and development of a problem and differential list. The course will also cover the treatment options available for the management of osteoarthritis, including a multimodal approach.

Online activities (including quizzes and case studies) will support your learning and discussions on the online forum will be encouraged. We also provide additional resources to complement the course - the ‘BSAVA Bonus Bits’. These will include congress podcast recordings, JSAP and companion articles as well as a free chapter from the relevant BSAVA Manual (as well as a discount voucher for purchasing the whole book).

The first weekly unit will be released on the First Friday of the month, with the next weekly units being released on the following two Fridays. The discussion forum is open for the first three weeks of the course and the course content will remain available for a total of 8 weeks. You can complete the work how and when you choose over these 8 weeks.

Weekly Units

1. Working up a lameness
2. Common lameness - hips, knees and elbows
3. Osteoarthritis

Learning Objectives

1. To be able to perform a full orthopaedic examination and appreciate the importance of localising the problem
2. Delegates will be able to select appropriate diagnostic tests to help diagnosing common orthopaedic conditions
3. Delegates will have the knowledge of what treatment options are available for the common conditions
4. To be able to identify those cases where surgical treatment is indicated in the management of osteoarthritis
