This Learn online course is intended for veterinary surgeons wokring in clinical practice who would like to develop confidence in their approach to patients with cardiac conditions that present as emergencies. Cardiac emergencies pose a broad spectrum of challenges, from respiratory distress, to hypotension, and life-threatening arrhythmias. During this course, we will review the complete spectrum of cardiac emergencies, discussing not only pathophysiology of the disorders we must contend with, but also how to practically approach the most difficult cases in the setting of primary care practice. Specific topics to be covered are management of the most severe congestive heart failure patients, diagnosis and treatment of tachy- and brady-arrhythmias and pericardial effusions. At the end of the course, real-life cases will be used to illustrate crucial points and reflect on the material covered.
Online activities (including quizzes and case studies) will support your learning and discussions on the online forum will be encouraged. We also provide additional resources to complement the course - the ‘BSAVA Bonus Bits’. These will include congress podcast recordings, JSAP and companion articles as well as a free chapter from the relevant BSAVA Manual (as well as a discount voucher for purchasing the whole book).
The first weekly unit will be released on the First Friday of the month, with the next weekly units being released on the following two Fridays. The discussion forum is open for the first three weeks of the course and the course content will remain available for a total of 8 weeks. You can complete the work how and when you choose over these 8 weeks.
1. Acute presentation of heart failure
3. Pericardial effusion
1. Understand the common causes of acute heart failure in dogs and cats, and be able to translate the material covered into practical tips for refining your clinical practice
2. Review the common emergency room arrhythmias, and integrate this knowledge into your approach to ECGs
3. Appreciate the different anti-arrhythmic drugs that can be used and scaffold this information on a background of basic cardiac electrophysiology
4. Challenge yourself with interactive case discussion and use this peer-to-peer dialogue to reflect upon your own clinical experience and plan for how to manage cases in the future
Kieran worked in general practice for 6-years after graduation, where he became interested in cardiology and gained an initial post-graduate qualification in the subject. In 2011, he undertook a cardiology residency and Masters degree at the Royal Veterinary College in London. He is an American and European college Diplomate in Cardiology, and an RCVS Recognised Specialist in the subject. He works as Clinical Lead in Cardiology at Langford Vets, University of Bristol, where he treats all species and works alongside two other Diplomates and two residents in training. Alongside a busy cardiovascular interventional caseload in dogs and horses, he works with the feline centre to treat cats with heart disease. He has published widely on a variety of topics, but has a particular passion for feline cardiomyopathy and congenital heart disease. He had the privilege of speaking all over the world to help vets learn more about cardiology, and is supported at home by his incredibly patient wife and four children - as well as a troublesome cat called Boris.
