Itchy dogs and cats – Let’s take a closer look!

The course is designed to expand our understanding and management of dogs and cats presenting with pruritus. There will be opportunities for discussion at the end of each session and the emphasis will be on a practical and case-based approach.

Session 1 – Pruritus: What causes the sensation of itch? How do we measure it? Understand the pathophysiology of pruritus, how pruritus is assessed and differences between cats and dogs
Session 2 – Diagnostic approach to cases presenting with pruritus: including use and interpretation of serology and intradermal testing for atopic dermatitis
Session 3 – Diet: how food can play a role in pruritus and how to diagnose cutaneous adverse food reaction
Session 4 – Systemic therapy for pruritus: how to use various systemic anti pruritic medications in practice for allergic patients, mode of actions, and possible side effects
Session 5 – Topical therapy for pruritus: how to maximise the effect of this management modality.
Session 6 – Explore and discuss other non-allergic dermatological diseases which result in pruritus
Session 7 – What’s new in pruritus: concepts and therapeutics

Learning objectives for the course

1.    Understand how to approach cases of pruritus in a logical way
2.    Know how to perform and evaluate diagnostic tests: both in-house and from external laboratories
3.    Understand the treatment options available for management of pruritic skin disease
4.    Gain confidence in selecting appropriate management of individual cases
5.    Acquire knowledge of some of the latest treatments for allergic skin disease

To qualify for an applicable refund, cancellations must emailed to or requested by telephone on 01452 726700. With over 30 days’ notice we will refund 70% of the course fee.  With between 15-30 days’ notice we will refund 50% of the course fee.  No refunds will be provided for cancellations with notice of 14 days or less, however if we are able to resell your place on the course we will provide a full refund.

BSAVA reserves the right to alter the programme or the speaker should this become necessary due to unavoidable circumstances.  BSAVA reserves the right to cancel a course due to unforeseen circumstances.  Registrants should note that the BSAVA member's rate applies only when the person attending the course is a member of the Association.  To qualify for the reduced member's rate for courses, non-members must join BSAVA prior to the course.
