An update on neutering - should we be tailoring it to the individual?
Holiday Inn, Haydock, Lodge Lane, Newton Le Willows Haydock Merseyside, WA12 0JG
Should we neuter... and if so, when?
Catherine "When I look back to 1994, my year of qualification, I was very clear in my mind why I was advocating neutering, so in a female dog or cat, it was to prevent unwanted litters, prevent pyometra, reduce the incidence of mammary neoplasia and take away the inconvenience of seasons for an owner. In male dogs and cats, castration would reduce unwanted matings, reduce aggression and territorial behaviour, prevent testicular and prostatic disease. Currently in 2019, 25 years later, I have become slightly more sceptical about some of the afore-mentioned reasons. I have come to realise that the surgical intervention of neutering is not without potential deleterious consequences, such as being a contributing factor to developing urinary incontinence, increasing the risk of developing osteosarcoma in at-risk breeds, exacerbating weight gain and compounding undesirable behaviour traits."
The evening lecture will look into the positive and negative sides of neutering for discussion and ultimately question should we tailor our neutering advice to the individual?
