Overview of award
The course is designed to provide a basic introduction into the discipline of canine rehabilitation. It is designed to provide a brief review of canine musculoskeletal anatomy focusing on anatomical land-marks and forelimb flexors and extensors as well as the key muscles of the trunk and neck. This section is essential to allow candidates to develop a degree of proficiency in palpation and examination of the rehabilitation patient. It also covers the basics of gait analysis.
The key skill of outcome assessment is also covered - this enables candidates to use pain scores as well as other objective and subjective measures to critically appraise any technique they implement in the rehabilitation context.
The course focuses on basic rehabilitation techniques such as hot and cold therapy, manual therapy and exercise based rehabilitation - all of which can be incorporated into practice at minimal cost but which are extremely effective rehabilitation tools.
The course is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to rehabilitation and it is envisaged that nurses subsequent to to taking the course should be able to work effectively as part of a rehabilitation team with a supporting veterinary surgeon and be able to implement basic rehabilitation skills into practice. It is not designed to make them a trained Physiotherapist
