Diagnosis and Management of Anaemia in Dogs & Cats (followed by the Northern Ireland Regions Annual Regional Meeting)

Anaemia is a common presenting sign in small animal practice. It is imperative to approach the anaemic patient logically in order to obtain a definitive diagnosis and to implement the most appropriate treatment options. In this course we will explore the diagnostic approach to the anaemic patient, with focus on differentiating between regenerative and non-regenerative anaemias using in-house equipment and blood film examination. We will also discuss the diagnosis and management of immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia in dogs and cats. Transfusion therapy, including blood typing and administration of blood products will also be covered along with an overview of transfusion reactions.
This course will cover:
- Differentiating between regenerative and non-regenerative anaemia
- Diagnosis and management of IMHA
- Use of blood and blood products
- Monitoring transfusion therapy
This course will be followed by the Northern Ireland Regions Annual Regional Meeting.
