Antimicrobial Prescribing for Small Animal Practitioners: What's Changing?
The Royal Oak, Ockbrook, 55 Green Lane, Ockbrook Derby Derbyshire, DE72 3SE
Antimicrobial resistance is one of the highest profile public health concerns at present in both human and animal medicine. As a result of the pressure to reduce antimicrobial use and delay the development and spread of drug resistant microbes much of the way we use these drugs is changing.
This talk will give a brief refresher of the types of antimicrobials available to small animal practitioners in the UK. It will introduce the concept of antimicrobial stewardship and the BVA’s PROTECT guidelines. It will outline practical steps practices can take to audit their own resistance profiles and usage. Finally it will also outline the latest policy changes at EU and UK level and the ramifications of those for UK practitioners.
