Northern Ireland pet travel scheme: Travelling from GB to NI

29 April 2025

Veterinary professionals in small animal practice may wish to be aware that the Northern Ireland pet travel scheme is now open for applications. This follows the announcement in November 2024 of the Government’s intention to launch a new pet travel scheme as part of the Windsor Framework.

The scheme enables owners of a pet dog, cat, ferret or assistance dog to travel from Great Britain to Northern Ireland with a simple Northern Ireland pet travel document (PTD) which is free of charge and is valid for as long as the individual owns the pet. The key requirement of the scheme is that the pet or assistance dog is microchipped before travel.

Professionals in small animal practice may wish to make any clients intending to travel from GB to NI aware and direct them to the following government website for further up-to-date information.
