SPVS/BVA/BSAVA/RCVS Final Year Student Seminar

Attendance at the SPVS event
The SPVS event is aimed at students entering their final year and is accepted by all the veterinary schools as part of Extra Mural Studies (EMS). It provides information on jobs in the profession, how to apply for them, what to expect and how to succeed in them. It also provides information about support networks for new graduates, and insights into business and personal financial management and the importance of communication skills. You will also meet and mix with members of the veterinary profession and associated organisations. More than 90 per cent of new graduates will enter practice but much of the content is relevant to any career.
During the seminar there will be tutor groups, a syndicate exercise, a course dinner, an informal inter-school review, and other entertainment. On one evening, there will be an opportunity to meet personnel from various veterinary societies that are all committed to high-quality veterinary CPD.
SPVS Final Year Student Seminar 2009
The 2009 SPVS event was entitled Your First Job – Challenges and Opportunities and took place from the 3rd – 6th September 2009 at the Lancaster University.
Over 160 students attended the four day event from each of the 8 veterinary schools with a range of detailed and insightful lectures on offer, covering everything that a newly qualified practitioner would need to know about their first foray into practice. An intensive event, students crammed in a full day of lectures, discussion groups and panel seminars followed by the popular social activities in the evenings, including the competitive games night on the Saturday evening.
The SPVS weekend is organised, and heavily supported by the SPVS Educational Trust, BVA, RCVS Trust and the BSAVA; as well as commercial and veterinary companies. Once again the BSAVA were pleased to take part in the event, both as a sponsor and in order to provide a face to the Association for our e-student members. Our stand gave students the opportunity to become a member, circulated our new student edition of companion magazine, discussed the benefits on offer through BSAVA membership, volunteering to be a Steward at Congress, submitting abstracts to Congress and taking advantage of the give-aways!
Our thanks go to those of you who spoke to us about the Association in your own time; your feedback is really important to us and does make a difference.
