Sensory deficits such as numbness or tingling sensations, in combination with radiating pain are well known and frequent sequelae of nerve root lesions in humans; in the author’s opinion, they also play an important role in small animal medicine. The goal of this Masterclass is first to give an outline of the clinical presentation of foraminal lesions in companion animals and the pathophysiology of nerve roots involved. Based on this information, typical imaging findings and the suitability of different MRI protocols to diagnose these conditions will be discussed for the cervical, thoracolumbar and lumbosacral spine. This will be followed by a presentation of surgical foraminotomy procedures and a discussion of the risks involved at the different locations. Finally, physiotherapeutic strategies for the postoperative period will be presented.
