Subtle signs of respiratory compromise can often progress quickly to profound respiratory distress. Veterinary nurses need to be able to recognize mild, moderate or severe dyspnoea and respiratory failure, and to know various techniques that will give the best chance of a positive outcome. This Nursing Masterclass will focus on recognizing and treating respiratory distress, and discuss the various mechanisms and diseases that can cause respiratory difficulties. Videos will be used as an aid to recognizing respiratory patterns. A thorough discussion will take place on methods of providing oxygen, as well as oxygen supplementation theory, and methods for managing patients with tracheostomy and thoracostomy tubes. The goal of this session is to teach techniques that will reduce patient anxiety and increase patient comfort. This Masterclass will best suit the intermediate to advanced level veterinary nurse who frequently sees, or has an interest in, respiratory emergencies.
