The Clinical Research Abstracts are an important part of the BSAVA Congress Scientific Programme. The criteria for judging the abstracts include the likely impact of the work presented, the quality of the written abstract and the originality of the work. The awards take the form of a £300 cheque to be spent on CPD.

The CRA's are split into three categories which are as follows:

• Medicine Award
• Surgical Award
• Practitioner Award sponsored by companion magazine

The 2009 Medicine Award was presented to Simon Tappin for the CRA entitled ‘Frequency of the mutant MDR1 allele associated with multidrug sensitivity in dogs in the United Kingdom’

The 2009 Surgical Award was presented to Davinia Draffan for the CRA entitled ‘Investigation of radiographic analysis of tronchlear notch sclerosis in the detection of canine medial coronoid process disease’

The 2009 BSAVA companion Practitioner Award was presented to Sophie Oestreich for the CRA entitled ‘Attitudes of owners towards toxicity from chemotherapy for cancer in dogs’
