BSAVA Guide to the Use of Veterinary Medicines – available now

The BSAVA Guide to the Use of Veterinary Medicines is an invaluable resource for veterinary practitioners, providing comprehensive and authoritative information on the use of veterinary medicines in companion animals in the UK. It has been recently updated following review by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD).

The Medicines Guide is organized in three sections:

1. Medicines – this section covers the authorization and classification of medicines, prescribing, supplying, dispensing and labelling procedures, record keeping and audits, controlled drugs, and cytotoxic drugs.
2. Dispensary management and staff training – this section covers registration of premises and inspections, correct storage of medicines, dispensary management and standard operating procedures, suitably qualified persons, health and safety, and medicine waste disposal.
3. Responsible use of medicines – this section covers the prescribing cascade, informed consent, antibacterials, importing medicines, backyard poultry, remote supply, racing Greyhounds, dart guns, pharmacovigilance, antiparasitic resistance, and responsible prescribing and dispensing for exotic pets, zoo and wildlife species

The latest addition to the Medicines Guide is a chapter on responsible prescribing and dispensing for exotic pets, zoo and wildlife. With information on the storage of medications at zoos and wildlife centres, prescribing under the cascade, and the treatment of zoo and wildlife patients, this chapter will be of interest to those practitioners who see these animals on an infrequent or regular basis. The information in this chapter has been updated following review by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).
