Brexit: Update on Pet Travel

Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales), including the Channel Islands and Isle of Man, will become a Part 2 listed third country under the EU Pet Travel Scheme from 1^st January 2021.

UK Government have updated their guidance regarding pet travel and advised that a current EU pet passport issued in Great Britain (GB) will not be valid for travel to Northern Ireland (NI) from GB, the Channel Islands and Isle of Man from 1^st January 2021. The updated Guidance applies to individuals travelling to the EU and NI with their pet cats, ferrets or dogs, including assistance dogs.

NI-based pets and assistance dogs returning to NI from GB can use an NI issued EU Pet Passport to re-enter NI and will not need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC). Government is advising owners that they should contact DAERA or their vet for further information on entrance requirements for returning to NI.

The UK government recognises that pet owners and assistance dog users will need time to adjust to these changes. It’s working with the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) on an enforcement approach that takes these challenges into account. This approach will be implemented in a way that supports pet owners and assistance dog users while the government seeks a permanent solution.

Guidance has also been updated for individuals travelling with more than 5 pets and for commercial pet movements.
