Avian Influenza Prevention Zone declared for Wales

30 January 2025

In response to the increased avian influenza risk, an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) with mandatory biosecurity has been introduced across Wales from 30th January 2025.

The AIPZ will require all keepers of poultry and other captive birds, irrespective of the size of the flock or how the birds are kept, to take appropriate and practicable steps to protect avian health and welfare and prevent disease introduction and spread.

All bird keepers in Wales must remain vigilant and implement the stringent biosecurity measures required to protect poultry & captive birds. All bird keepers in Wales are also required to complete the mandatory biosecurity self-assessment checklist. Further information is available here.

An AIPZ is also in place across England and Scotland with mandatory housing in parts of England. For further information, see our news article here.

Avian Influenza is a notifiable disease, and any suspicion should be reported immediately to the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) on 0300 303 8268.

Check the avian influenza interactive map to see where restrictions are in place. Further detailed information on measures bird keepers must take is available on GOV.Wales.
