BSAVA supports drive to improve health and welfare of brachycephalic dogs

Many BSAVA members will be aware of the increasing profile brachycephalic breeds have acquired in the media over recent months. These breeds have become the topic of conversation or debate on many fronts, as was demonstrated by discussions at the recent joint FECAVA-WSAVA Congress - please click for the news story here.

As a member of the Brachycephalic Working Group (BWG), the BSAVA is collaborating with relevant organisations in the UK to address some of the health and welfare challenges posed by these dog breeds. The Group is chaired by Dr Dan O’Neill of the Royal Veterinary College and is comprised of representatives from the Kennel Club, relevant breed clubs, leading animal welfare charities, researchers and veterinary organisations, including BVA and BSAVA.

The aims of the Working Group are to raise awareness of the health problems relating to brachycephalic breeds, identify ways in which their health and welfare can be improved and also, reduce the public demand for these breeds.

To facilitate the aims of BWG, a website has been established to highlight the work of the Group and the information that is available to support understanding of brachycephalic breeds and related health problems. Albeit the website is newly established, the intention is to add further information and resources to it over time.

If you are interested in finding out more, please follow the link to the BWG website here.
