This course is aimed at any veterinary surgeon who is performing GI surgery whether you wish to learn how to perform the techniques or those who wish to improve their techniques.
Techniques covered will include Gastrotomy, enterotomy, enterectomy for removal of solid gastric foreign bodies, linear foreign bodies and jejunal foreign bodies.
Knowing the most common neoplasms of the GI tract as well as covering GDV and and septic peritonitis.

Online activities (including quizzes and case studies) will support your learning and discussions on the online forum will be encouraged. We also provide additional resources to complement the course - the ‘BSAVA Bonus Bits’. These will include congress podcast recordings, JSAP and companion articles as well as a free chapter from the relevant BSAVA Manual (as well as a discount voucher for purchasing the whole book).

The first weekly unit will be released on the First Friday of the month, with the next weekly units being released on the following two Fridays. The discussion forum is open for the first three weeks of the course and the course content will remain available for a total of 8 weeks. You can complete the work how and when you choose over these 8 weeks.

Weekly units

1.   The basics of good gastrointestinal tract surgery
2.    It shouldn't be in there - removing foreign bodies and tumours
3.   Twist and Shout - GDV and septic peritonitis

Overall intended learning outcomes
After completion of the course, participants will be able to

  • Know the presenting signs for an animal with Gastrointestinal disease.
  • Know how to stabilise the GI patient with fluids and analgesia.
  • Be able to perform a gastrotomy, enterotomy and an enterectomy .
  • Identify and perform surgical treatment of a GDV
  • Identify and perform surgical treatment of septic peritonitis

    Tutor: Alison Moores

    ?Alison graduated from the University of Bristol in 1996. She spent four years in general practice, and completed an Internship and Residency in Small Animal Surgery at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC). She stayed at the RVC as a Lecturer in Surgery until 2007. She joined Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists in 2008 where she works as a Soft Tissue Surgeon seeing referrals in all types of soft tissue cases. She is interested in and competent in all aspects of soft tissue surgery, including interventional radiology techniques. Alison became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2005 and was reaccredited as a specialist in 2010 and 2015, and is an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Small Animal Surgery.
    Alison is also involved with post-graduate teaching in the UK, providing webinars and teaching on post-graduate courses. She is the Surgery Program co-ordinator for the BSAVA certificate program and an examiner for the RVC’s CertAVP. She has been an external examiner for the certificate program at Edinburgh University.
     She is involved with the veterinary community and as a volunteer has been Associate Editor of the Journal of Small Animal Practice, a member of the BSAVA Education committee and spent 10 years on the committee of the Association of Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgeons, most recently as President.
    She co-edited the second edition of the BSAVA 'Manual of Canine and Feline Wound Management and Reconstruction’ and has published many book chapters. She has published clinical and research papers and has lectured in the UK, Scandinavia, USA and Asia.

    Terms and Conditions: All courses must be paid for in full at the time of booking.

    To qualify for an applicable refund, cancellations must emailed to or requested by telephone on 01452 726700. With over 30 days’ notice we will refund 70% of the course fee.  With between 15-30 days’ notice we will refund 50% of the course fee.  No refunds will be provided for cancellations with notice of 14 days or less, however if we are able to resell your place on the course we will provide a full refund.

    BSAVA reserves the right to alter the programme or the speaker should this become necessary due to unavoidable circumstances.  BSAVA reserves the right to cancel a course due to unforeseen circumstances.  Registrants should note that the BSAVA member's rate applies only when the person attending the course is a member of the Association.  To qualify for the reduced member's rate for courses, non-members must join BSAVA prior to the course.
