Clinical management of hip dysplasia - using quality improvement to impact outcome
Wales Veterinary Science Centre, Y Buarth, Aberystwyth Dyfed, SY23 1ND
Outline:
Hip dysplasia is a common orthopaedic condition in young dogs; it is a developmental disease that is progressive and invariably leads to the development of coxo-femoral osteoarthritis.
This BSAVA session in conjunction with RCVS Knowledge will review hip dysplasia, how we can investigate it and the treatment options available. The evidence for each treatment and where to find it will be discussed and applied to examples of young dogs presenting with lameness/ hip laxity and older patients that need osteoarthritis management.
Topics to be covered:
• Hip dysplasia: The condition and diagnosis
• Treatment options in young dogs: what is the evidence, where do we find it? What do I do and why?
• Treatment options in older dogs: what is the evidence, where do we find it? What do I do and why?
• How to incorporate the evidence into treatment guidelines
• How to measure outcomes
• How to use checklists to minimise error with our treatment choices.
