Evidence in the management of feline cardiomyopathy
Silverbirch Hotel, 5 Gortin Road, Omagh Armagh, BT79 7DH
Cardiomyopathies are an important group of diseases in cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) being the most commonly diagnosed cardiomyopathy in this species (reported prevalence of 14.7%). Other cardiomyopathies include restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM), arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Unfortunately, feline patients with preclinical cardiomyopathies can be difficult to detect due to the absence of heart murmurs or other clinical signs of cardiac disease in many cases. Additionally, many cats may present in acute respiratory distress due to congestive heart failure without any obvious clinical signs prior to presentation. In some cases, the first presentation may be in the context of thromboembolic disease which can be a catastrophic event with a grave prognosis.
The learning objectives for this series of lectures include:
- A review of the pathophysiology of feline cardiomyopathies
- To understand the epidemiology of the most common feline cardiomyopathies and how we may detect preclinical patients in the general practice setting
- Diagnosis and management of congestive heart failure in cats with cardiomyopathies
- The current evidence for therapeutics in the management of feline cardiomyopathies
- The approach to feline cardiogenic aortic thromboembolism in the emergency setting
