BSAVA commissions ‘Anaesthesia without isoflurane’ webinar to support profession during shortage

In response to the nationwide shortage of isoflurane, BSAVA has commissioned a webinar to discuss alternative solutions for vets.

The webinar, 'Anaesthesia without isoflurane', was presented by Ian Self, Clinical Associate Professor and European and RCVS Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery, University of Nottingham and incoming Chair of BSAVA Scientific Committee.

It covers the use of low flow anaesthesia and monitoring techniques to spare gaseous anaesthetic agents as well as tips on partial and total intravenous anaesthesia (PIVA and TIVA) and analgesia, and was designed to answer clinical questions submitted by BSAVA members since the shortage was announced.

BSAVA is also providing free access to the chapter on ‘Injectable anaesthetics’ from the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Anaesthesia and Analgesia, 3rd edition.

The webinar is free to BSAVA members and costs £25 + VAT for non-members. The chapter is free to everyone. Both are available as a collection in the BSAVA library

BSAVA has seen record engagement in the information it has supplied to the veterinary industry in the wake of the shortage - a Facebook post about the free ‘injectable anaesthetics’ chapter reached more than 35,000 people with 7,000 engagements (clicks, shares and comments).

Lucie Goodwin, BSAVA Head of Education, said: “BSAVA is taking important action to ensure we support the whole veterinary profession during these challenging times, and the information we have made available has been tremendously well received.

“The webinar hopefully answers many of the questions the profession has about what to do during this nationwide shortage of isoflurane, and the manual chapter is a useful additional resource that offers practical advice throughout.”
