Statement from the Veterinary Profession

In light of coverage in the media regarding the veterinary profession the BSAVA would like to highlight the following:

  • When examples of “bad practice” are identified in the profession, we are all keen that it is exposed so that it can be stopped. None of us want animal welfare to be compromised or the whole profession tarred with that brush, so we are all keen that it is rooted out. We certainly don’t defend the indefensible.
  • The vast majority of vets are caring, hard working and ethical individuals whose primary interest is animal care, exactly why they became vets in the first place.
  • The frequency of complaints in the profession is actually incredibly low, with on average vets only getting one complaint to the RCVS every 15 years of their career.
  • The vast majority of vets and nurses have nothing whatsoever to hide and pride themselves in the quality of care that they provide day in day out to pets across the UK. Vets charge a professional fee for a highly skilled professional service and as small businesses must remain financially viable.
