Dealing with clients in difficult times

Coping with the loss of your pet

The contribution that pets make to owners lives can never be underestimated. Pets can bring immeasurable rewards in the form of companionship, protection, relaxation and exercise. They may be a link with events or people in a persons life and the bond that a person or family forms with them may be very strong.

BSAVA's charity Petsavers, have produced a leaflet which helps support pet owners through the most difficult of times. The leaflet looks at the issues of companionship, euthanasia, grief, the future and helping children to cope.

As a newly qualified veterinary professional, or a student approaching the latter stages of study, one of your key skills will be dealing with clients who have suffered loss and may well be highly emotional. The 'coping with the loss of your pet' leaflet can provide helpful advice for clients and can give you some hints on how to best manage and support your client.
