BSAVA Congress – European Speakers

  Margit Bossard BVMS DVM
Margit Bossard graduated from Utrecht University and then completed an internship at the University Hospital. She pursued her interest in the behaviour of dogs, cats and people and became a behavioural therapist. This has involved helping many owners of pets with behavioural problems, and organising and lecturing for several professional animal behaviour courses, including those at the University. As an expert in veterinary behavioural issues, Margit frequently speaks at congresses for veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses and therapists, and has written many articles. Since 2009 she has also been involved in veterinary management and marketing, first as a practice manager and now as a consultant/trainer for Onswitch.

  Oriol Domenech DVM Ms DipECVIM-CA
Oriol Domenech completed an internship at the Clinica Veterinaria Gran Sasso in Milan, Italy from 2000 to 2001. From 2001 to 2004 he completed the residency programme of ECVIM-CA, obtaining the Diploma of ECVIM-CA (cardiology) in 2006. Oriol is the author of several articles and studies that have been published in national and international journals and presented at meetings worldwide. He has been an invited speaker at several national and international congresses and courses. He is currently working at the Istituto Veterinario di Novara in Novara, Italy and at the Survet Diagonal, Carvet in Barcelona, Spain, with cardiology referral cases.

Tony Glaus DipACVIM(Internal Medicine) ECVIM-CA(Internal Medicine and Cardiology)
Tony Glaus graduated from the University of Bern, before completing a doctoral thesis in veterinary neurology at the University, followed by an internship/residency in the Small Animal Clinic. He spent three years at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, University of Georgia, in Athens, as a resident in small animal internal medicine. Since 1994 Tony has worked at the Clinic for Small Animal Medicine, University of Zurich, where he is head of the Division of Cardiology. Tony’s interests have focused on cardiovascular catheter interventions and on extrapolating these techniques to other organ systems to the pathophysiology and diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension.

Nicolas Granger DVM MRCVS DipECVN
Nicolas Granger graduated from the National Veterinary School of Alfort, France, in 2002, where he also completed an internship in 2003 and his neurology residency from 2003 to 2006. He became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Neurology in October 2006. He then moved to the United Kingdom, at the Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital, University of Cambridge, where he has been first a clinical neurologist from 2006 to 2008 and then completed a PhD from 2008 to 2011 testing the efficacy of a cell therapy for dogs with naturally occurring spinal cord injuries (phase II cell therapy clinical trial). He has now joined a referral centre, Oncovet, in the north of France (Lille), were he also carries clinical trial as a member of the contract research organisation: Oncovet Clinical Research.
Vladimír Jekl MVDr PhD DipECZM(Small Mammal)
Vladimír Jekl is a 2002 graduate of the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno, Czech Republic, where he now serves as an assistant professor at the avian and exotic animal clinic. He has practised exclusively exotic animal medicine since 2002 and is a European Recognised Specialist in Zoological Medicine (Small Mammal). He has lectured extensively throughout Europe and has published numerous articles dealing with exotic animal medicine in regional and international journals. His current focus involves dental disease, internal medicine, diagnostic imaging and surgery in small mammals.

Jolle Kirpensteijn DVM PhD DipACVS DipECVS
Jolle Kirpensteijn graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University in 1988 and finished an internship and residency training in small animal surgery in the USA. He then completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at the Colorado State University Comparative Oncology Unit. In 1993, Jolle returned to Europe to accept a position in surgical oncology and soft tissue surgery at Utrecht University. In August 2008, Jolle was appointed professor in soft tissue surgery at Utrecht University. Jolle is a Diplomate of the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Surgeons. Jolle is currently president of the WSAVA.

Hans S. Kooistra DVM PhD DipECVIM-CA
Hans Kooistra followed an internship and a residency in internal medicine at the Department of Clinical Sciences of Companion Animals, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University from 1991 to 1994. Thereafter, he became assistant professor (1994 to 2003) and associate professor (2004 to present) in the same department. In 1997 he became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine-Companion Animals (ECVIM-CA). He successfully (’cum laude’) defended his PhD thesis entitled ‘Adenohypophyseal function in healthy dogs and in dogs with pituitary disease’ in December 2000. Hans is (co-)author of more than one hundred peer-reviewed articles and several book chapters.

Ruediger Korbel DrMedVet habil. DipECZM(Avian) CertSpecAvianOphthalmol
Ruediger Korbel graduated from the University Ludwig-Maximilians of Munich, Germany. In 1995 he finished his habilitation thesis on avian ophthalmology, anaesthesiology and photography. From 1999 to 2000 he served as a professor at the clinic for poultry at Vienna University, Austria, before undertaking an appointment as an associate professor at the Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota until 2003. In 2003 he took over as the director of the clinic for birds, reptiles, amphibians and pet fish. His specific working fields in avian and reptile medicine are ophthalmology, visual perception, animal welfare, orthopaedics and anaesthesia. He is a Diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine (Avian).

Björn Meij DVM PhD DipECVS
Björn Meij graduated from the University of Ghent, and completed a residency in small animal surgery at Utrecht University. He completed his PhD investigating transsphenoidal hypophysectomy in 1997 in Utrecht and then moved to Charlottesville for a neurological fellowship at the University of Virginia from 1999 to 2000. He went back to Utrecht and became an associate professor in orthopaedics and neurosurgery at the Department of Clinical Sciences of Companion Animals, Utrecht University. Björn has a particular interest in pituitary adenomas and disorders of the canine spine in dogs and cats.

Reto Neiger DrMedVet DipACVIM DipECVIM-CA PhD
Reto Neiger gained a Swiss veterinary degree in 1988 and then worked as a locum in mixed private practice and as a research fellow for one year to gain his DrMedVet. Reto then completed an internship and residency in internal medicine in Bern and Louisiana. To gain his PhD he carried out research into canine and feline Helicobacter infections at the human teaching hospital in Bern. From 1999 to 2003 Reto was a lecturer at the Royal Veterinary College and has been the clinical director of the small animal medical department of the University in Giessen, Germany since 2003. He is a Diplomate of the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Currently he is president of the ECVIM-CA.

Ab Osterhaus DVM PhD
Ab Osterhaus is Head of the Department of Virology at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam and professor of Wildlife virology and virus discovery at the University of Utrecht. Thirty years of experience in animal and human virology have resulted in a specific interest in viruses that ordinarily affect only animals but that can cross the species barrier. His research includes studies on virus reservoirs in wildlife, mechanisms of transmission and pathogenesis of viruses. The work of his team on SARS and Avian Influenza (H5N1) have enabled health authorities to effectively diagnose and isolate suspected cases and prepare for potential outbreaks.
Kathelijne Peremans DVM CertVR DipECVDI PhD
Kathelijne Peremans graduated from the University of Ghent, Belgium, and worked at the University of Liverpool for two years before moving back to Ghent. In 1994 she became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. In 1996 she joined a five year training in nuclear medicine. In 2001 she started the nuclear medicine division at the veterinary faculty and is head of this division. She obtained a PhD on functional brain imaging in dogs, which is still the main core of her research. She is highly involved in radioprotective issues and is a member of the Belgian Federal Scientific Advisory Board for ionising radiation.

Alessandro Piras DVM ISVS MRCVS
Alessandro Piras graduated from the Turin University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1989. He completed his surgical training at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Parma in 1993, gaining the Diploma of Specialist in Veterinary Surgery. Alessandro is now the owner of Oakland Referrals, Banbridge and Hillsborough, Northern Ireland. He is mostly dedicated to second opinions and referred cases on traumatology, spinal and orthopaedics, and is an active member of several scientific organisations. Another area of particular interest is canine sport medicine and surgery. Part of Alessandro’s clinical activity is dedicated to the treatment of injuries in high performance dogs.

Joris Robben DVM PhD DipECVIM-CA
Joris Robin graduated from Utrecht University in 1988 and subsequently performed a supplementary doctoral examination at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine (1990 to1994) at the Department of Clinical Sciences of Companion Animals in Utrecht. Since 1994 he has led the ICU in this department. In 1997 Joris became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. He finished his PhD on canine insulinomas in 2004. From 2008 to 2011 he was president of the European Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. In 2008/2009 Joris worked in the ICU of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of California, Davis.
Xavier Roura DVM PhD DipECVIM-CA
Xavier Roura is a veterinary surgeon at the Hospital Clínic Veterinari at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Xavier received his DVM from UAB in 1989, and from 1990 to 1991 he did an internship at the UAB. He received his PhD in 1999 with the work on the ‘Diagnosis of Canine Leishmaniasis with Polymerase Chain Reaction’. He became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2004. Since 1992 he has been working as a clinical instructor at the UAB. Xavier has been veterinary visitant of the Veterinary College of Ohio State University (1993), North Carolina State University (1997, 2001 and 2004) and Animal Medical Center in New York (2007).

Thomas Spillmann DrMedVet DipECVIM-CA
Thomas Spillmann graduated from the University of Leipzig, Germany. He was a staff member at the Department of Small Animal Internal Medicine, Justus-Liebig-University, Giessen, for eleven years before moving to the University of Helsinki, Finland. After a short return to Germany as Hill’s professor of gastroenterology and clinical nutrition at the School of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover, he was appointed professor of small animal internal medicine at the University of Helsinki. His main research interests are small animal gastroenterology and endoscopy. He has been secretary, president and past president of the European Society of Comparative Gastroenterology from 2001 to 2011.

Astrid M. van Dongen DVM
Astrid van Dongen graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University. After working in private practice for a few years, she returned to the department of clinical sciences of companion animals at Utrecht University for an internship and residency in internal medicine. She is currently working there as an internal medicine specialist, with focus on nephrology of companion animals. Her duties include patient care in the referral clinic, (post)graduate education and participation in research projects on renal disease and regeneration, as well as several international collaborations to improve the knowledge on renal disease in companion animals. Astrid is a board member of IRIS, ESVNU and WSAVA Renal Standardization Group.
